History of the library

National Scientific Agricultural Library of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine – leading special library of national importance; branch library-depository, a powerful scientific and information center for the formation of the branch segment of agrarian issues as a component in the information space of Ukraine, the document and information potential of which is represented by a fund of more than a million in 32 languages from 59 countries of the world.

Evolving, the institution went through a difficult path in formation and development, its name and subordination changed repeatedly.

It originates from 1917 in the library of the General Secretariat (Ministry) of Land Affairs of the Ukrainian Central Rada with a fund of 1,007 storage units.

After the creation of the Agricultural Scientific (later Scientific) Committee of Ukraine, which was subordinate to the People's Commissariat of Land Affairs (1918-1927), a specialized library continued to operate under it, which became a real center of industry literature, because of which acquired the status ofCentral.

The first decades of its operation coincided with the times of NEP and collectivization and were aimed at adapting its activities to the existing system of power. The team managed to achieve some success in spreading agronomic knowledge among villagers, as well as providing methodological assistance to scientists and librarians of already functioning industry research institutes and stations in solving tasks with the help of books and bibliographical information.

The period of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1944 became the most difficult and rather tragic testing times for the National Scientific Agricultural Library, as well as for the entire system of libraries in the country, if compared with the revolutionary events of 1917-1920.

Unfortunately, the NNSGB was not evacuated, just as not all universities were evacuated, and 24 out of 46 research institutes and institutions left the city. From October 1941, hard times came for Kharkiv and its residents German occupation, which lasted twenty-one months and ended on August 23, 1943. Library funds suffered losses. After the liberation of Kharkiv, the work of the library resumed.

The deployment of libraries in the liberated territories to fulfill their main functions after the terrible years of the German occupation was facilitated by the executive bodies of the Soviet government.

As of January 1, 1959, the book collections of the Library, which was part of the structure of the Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, included 300,000 library items from all branches of Ukrainian agriculture and its history. At that time: "the library serves n.-d. and educational village institutions, state and collective farm experimental rural areas. stations, employees of collective farms and state farms of the Ukrainian SSR… Contributes to the study and popularization of the latest scientific data and best practices in the USSR and abroad, publishing abstract and bibliographic collections, tables, diagrams, and organizing exhibitions.

In 1970, the Library was subordinated to the Southern Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and since then it has become a scientific and methodical center for the network of libraries of agricultural research institutes, research stations, higher educational institutions and technical colleges of Ukraine and Moldova.</p align="justify"> p>

A qualitatively new stage in the activity of the NNSGB began with its transfer in 1971 from the city of Kharkiv to the city of Kyiv.

Since 1992, the Library has been expanding the subject matter of bibliographic publications. More than 30 current and retrospective scientific auxiliary bibliographic indexes, designed for industry managers, scientists and agro-industrial production specialists, have been published.

From 1994 to 2003, the Library returns to its first academic name – Central Scientific Agricultural Library.

A new stage of the Library's activity as a research institution began in 1998. The National Library of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences received the status of a research institution. By the decision of the General Assembly of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of March 2001, it acquired the status of a research institute of the first category and was included in the Department of Regional Centers of APV of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Since 2000, it has started introducing information technologies into production activities, starting the creation of its own electronic resource "UkrAgroteka". This made it possible to provide transparency to the funds, to promptly and qualitatively satisfy the reading needs of users, including parliamentarians and government officials, scientists and specialists, teaching staff of educational institutions and the student contingent, farmers and other land users and landowners, businessmen and others.

By Resolution No. 1697 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of October 29, 2003 "On the Creation of the State Scientific Agricultural Library of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences" and the joint order of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences No. 178/45 dated 01.07.2002, it was officially declared for the first time at the state level that the following are being created: «… a scientific institution on the basis of the Central Scientific Agricultural Library, which is being liquidated, and it is also established that it: "… is a special library of national importance, performing the functions of a scientific research and methodical center of the agricultural industry".

From December 2012 State Scientific Agricultural Library of the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine for a significant contribution to the development of agriculture, information and library work and national history of science and technology was granted the status of National (Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 700/2012 dated 14.12.2012).
